Dr. Omar Mohammed

Dr. Omar Mohammed is a historian from Mosul, known as the anonymous blogger “Mosul Eye,” through which he documented life under the Islamic State. His new book, Mosul Eye: A Scholar’s Clandestine War Against ISIS, tells the story of his secret efforts to document ISIS’s rule.

He heads the Antisemitism Research Initiative at the George Washington University’s Program on Extremism and hosts the podcasts “Mosul and the Islamic State” and “36 Minutes on Antisemitism.” Omar teaches Middle East History, Cultural Heritage Diplomacy, and Counter Terrorism at Sciences Po University.

He previously served as a senior consultant at UNESCO from 2018 to 2023 and has led cultural heritage and oral history projects across Iraq and the Middle East. He also advocates for social initiatives in Mosul, including efforts to restore the University of Mosul’s Central Library, and led the Green Mosul tree-planting project.

He holds a Ph.D. in Middle East and Ottoman History from EHESS in Paris and an MA in Middle East History from the University of Mosul. He was named Iraq’s 2013 Researcher of the Year and was listed among The Algemeiner’s Top 100 People Positively Influencing Jewish Life in 2020. He now lives in exile in Europe.
