A Statement on Academic Boycotts

Academic boycotts are inimical to academic freedom and open debate. We believe that scholars and their research should be judged on their merits alone. Therefore, the Association for the Study of the Middle East and Africa opposes boycotts of scholars or academic institutions based on national origins as well as the general politicization of Middle Eastern and African studies. The insertion of political agendas and bias does a grave disservice to these noble disciplines.

ASMEA provides a forum to promote informed discussion of the broad range of issues, past and present, that define the Middle East and Africa. We welcome participation by any scholar or student of the regions interested in academic freedom, open debate, and advancing understanding of our regions of study.
